2026 Artworks List

True liberation from prejudice begins in the sanctuary of the human mind. Because every action is born of a thought, we remain prisoners of a world we cannot fix until we master the mind that created it. We are addicted to our own perceptions; to change the world, we must first have the courage to change ourselves.

I love what’s happening with Proud Watford – spreading a firm message that A Place Without Prejudice is what we all strive for. Let’s continue to speak out, march, perform, sing, and create beautiful art…together…and to carry that message across Watford and beyond.

My drawing depicts Sappho, a woman recognised as one of the greatest ancient Greek lyric poets. Some of her work references love between women and for me she represents a clear recognition that same-sex attraction is at least as old as human civilisation and was celebrated, openly millennia ago, so why not equally now?

As an older member of the LGBTQ+ community, I know I'm integral to the age-old circle of life and nature; yet all too often, my attempts to shine have been hesitant at best. That, I believe, is the personal toll prejudice has taken on me for over all these years. My aspiration now, and for the generations to come, is for a world where everyone shines unhesitatingly, authentically and brightly - whoever they are - and however people wish to live their lives.

In a world that too often demands silence, our town should be a sanctuary where affection is spoken in the loudest, truest voices. We strive for a space completely unburdened by prejudice, offering refuge to every heart, regardless of who they love or how they identify. Here, with us, diversity is celebrated rather than tolerated, and visibility acts as both a shield against hate and a beacon of joy.
Love Out Loud transforms a quiet resilience into a vibrant, unstoppable roar of pride and unconditional acceptance.

We are a community of people – with our individual lives, but with a common interest in supporting each other in building a town that celebrates diversity and opportunity for everyone. This is an important message that we can take beyond the boundaries of Watford, into a complicated but beautiful world.

I wanted to show a planet made up of a multitude of genuine identities, instead of just the binary. I’ve included the ‘+’ symbol to remind us that there are many more identities than those I’ve included because everyone is different and equally valued.

Part of the Freedom Collection, this piece explores the right to live openly and authentically without fear of judgement or discrimination. While not drawn from personal identity, the work comes from a strong sense of protection and solidarity towards anyone made to feel ‘other’ for simply being themselves.

This winged wheelchair symbol is an expression of our commitment to intersectional inclusivity. It represents the wings of the Pride movement and the physical barriers faced by people with disabilities. By incorporating this symbol into our display, we honour the multi-faceted lives of LGBTQ+ individuals with disabilities and celebrate complete, unhindered participation in our community.

I chose the double ancient Greek letter ‘Lambda’ to represent the struggles of my predecessors for what was then called ‘gay rights’ in the early 1970s, who adopted the ‘Lambda’ as a dynamic symbol of struggle and hope. Today, we recognise and celebrate multiple sexualities and identities as equally valid and that’s because of the effort of those brave people over 50 years ago.
