Understanding Identity
Words matter. Whether you're part of the LGBTQIA+ community, supporting someone who is, or simply want to get it right, this page is a friendly place to start.
We've gathered a few trusted guides to pronouns and the words people use to describe who they are, along with some dates worth knowing.
Nobody expects you to know everything. What matters is being open, listening, and respecting how people describe themselves.
Proud Watford's goal is to be a place without prejudice, and that includes trans, non-binary and intersex people, always.

Getting the Words Right
Pronouns: the Basics
Pronouns are the words we use for someone instead of their name, such as she/her, he/him or they/them. Some people use more than one set, and some use newer pronouns like ze/zir.
You can't always tell someone's pronouns just by looking at them.
If you're not sure, use their name or ask kindly.
Sharing your own pronouns is always optional. Respecting other people's matters more.

If You Get It Wrong
Everyone slips up sometimes. Say a quick sorry, use the right word and carry on. A big apology can make things more awkward for the other person.
If you hear someone else get it wrong, a gentle correction can help, as long as the person it's about is happy for you to step in.
Keep practising. It gets easier.
